What Is Endorse?
Example: "Don't forget to endorse your paycheck before depositing it at the ATM."
Why It Matters
Endorsing a check is a security measure that proves you, the payee, have authorized the deposit or cashing of that check. Without your signature on the back, most banks will refuse to process it. There are three types of endorsement. A blank endorsement is just your signature, which makes the check cashable by anyone. A restrictive endorsement adds "For deposit only" above your signature, which limits the check to deposit into your account. A special endorsement signs the check over to someone else. For security, always use a restrictive endorsement.
