Definition
A 9-digit number that identifies your bank. Used for setting up direct deposits, wire transfers, and automatic payments. Found on checks and in your banking app.

Why It Matters
Your routing number is like your bank's address in the financial system. Every bank and credit union in the U.S. has a unique routing number assigned by the American Bankers Association. You need it whenever money is being sent to or from your account electronically: direct deposit setup, wire transfers, automatic bill payments, and tax refund deposits. You can find your routing number on the bottom-left of a check, in your bank's mobile app, or on the bank's website. Large banks may have different routing numbers for different states.
