What Is Transfer?

Definition
Moving money from one account to another, either within the same bank or between different banks.

Example: "I transferred $500 from my checking account to my savings account."

Why It Matters

Transfers are how you move money between your own accounts and to other people's accounts. Internal transfers between your own accounts at the same bank are usually instant and free. External transfers to accounts at other banks can take one to three business days through ACH and are often free. Wire transfers are same-day but cost $15 to $50. Peer-to-peer transfer services like Zelle are integrated into many banking apps and offer free, near-instant transfers to other people. Setting up automatic transfers to savings is one of the best habits for building wealth.
